Professor Amartya Sen, Nobel Prize laureate, has said that it is wrong to project India as a Hindu civilisation because its history has been diverse and to see its history in strictly Hindu terms can only miss a lot of India’s traditions.

Over the last two decades, the idea that Indian civilisation is a Hindu civilisation has gained some ground.

It has also led to considerable political intolerance, playing up Hindu-Muslim conflicts rather than constructive interactions. This has also gone with some targeting of minority groups, for example in Bombay in the early 1990s and in Gujarat in 2002. That is why I think that to understand India as a Hindu country is not only a big descriptive mistake, it is also politically nasty.

It is used to ignite the ferocity of an exclusive and allegedly dominant identity of the Hindus, and to undermine the common identity that all Indians can share.

இந்தியாவின் நாகரீகம் இந்து நாகரீகம் அல்லவென்றால் எது இந்து நாகரீகம். சவூதியில் இருக்கிறதே அதுவா? அல்லது ஜெரூசலத்தில் காணப்படும் நாகரீகத்தின் சின்னங்கள், அதுவா?

அது Politically correct இல்லாதனால் அது பொய்யென்று ஆகி விடாது..! மேலும் எது Political intolerance ?

இன்ஷா அல்லாஹ் We will take over India என்று கத்தும் கூட்டத்தை அடித்து விரட்டுவதா ?

சுவாமி விவேகானந்தர் சொன்னது நினைவுக்கு வருகின்றது.

Tell the truth boldly, whether it hurts or not. Never pander to weakness. If truth is too much for intelligent people and sweeps them away, let them go; the sooner the better.

அமர்த்யா சென் செய்வது Pandering to weakness...அதி மேதாவி அறிவாளிகள் செய்யும் அதே தவறு.
